Unforgettable Memories in Pensiangan

For the first time, the Expedition Club of SPU organised a medical expedition to Pensiangan district from 14th to 18th May 2011. This 5-day and 4-night expedition has left new and unforgettable memories to all the members.

The aims of this expedition were to promote School of Medicine to the rural population of Sabah, to give opportunity to the staff to experience rural life, to collect specimens from the area for medical teaching purposes and also to offer experience to the laboratory technologists in field work. Kampung Sansandukon and Kampung Tinanduk were the villages that were covered during the expedition. Various activities were conducted by the members such as health talks with topics on balanced diets, smoking, dental hygiene and also worms knowledge, collecting of human samples: blood, stool, hair and head lice, aerobics, and quiz, karaoke competition for adults and kids and also movie shows at night.

Other than that, medications for mild illnesses were given out to the villagers. An unexpected Futsal competition was organised by SMK Sansandukon between SPU staff and Sansandukon villagers. Very energetic Sansandukon male won the competition for male category and it was a draw for female category. SPU staff club collected used clothes, toys, slipper, and shoes to be donated to the villagers. Some generous SPU staff donated new toothbrush kits. Good job SPU Staff Club committee!

The expedition became more challenging and joyful with the participation of 4 x 4 club members. Travelling by 4 x 4 vehicles was an unremarkable experience for all the 24 SPU staff.
